Work overview
“Sengoku Youko” is a fictional tale set against the backdrop of Japan’s historical Sengoku period,
where mystical fox spirits (yokai) intervene in human affairs, subtly influencing the course of history from the shadows.
The story follows a young fox spirit protagonist as he grows, comes to understand his powers,
and navigates the complex relationships and conflicts between the human and spirit worlds. The narrative blends historical events with fantasy elements to create a unique world.
Character introduction
Senya (千夜)
The protagonist of the second part, “Senma Konton-hen Arc,” is a mysterious boy who seldom shows his emotions.
He is the son of Kamiun, who is feared as “The Dragon,” the leader of the Four Beast Generals of the Dankei group. It is said that he possesses even greater hidden powers than his father.
Tsukiko (月湖)
The protagonist of the second part, “Senma Konton-hen,” appears from this arc onwards. She is the strongest swordfighter in her village. After saving Chiya, the two become friends.
A sudden attack on their village by a Kurui-gami (a mad god) prompts her to seek a change from her own weakness.
She forcefully requests to become an apprentice to Shinsuke in order to follow him and strengthen herself.
Jinka (迅火)
The protagonist of the first part, “Senaoshi Siblings Arc,” is a human who practices the ways of immortality and travels with Tama, a fox spirit, as sworn siblings.
A traumatic event in childhood turns him against humans. He possesses a secret technique called “Spirit Transformation,”
and fights in the liminal space between darkness and humanity, searching for a way to become true darkness.
ama (たま)
She appears as a young girl, but is actually a fox spirit who has lived for over 200 years. Unlike Jinka,
she loves humans and travels as part of the “World-Reforming Siblings” to correct the world’s evils.
She has a strong and protective nature, yet also shows a young and endearing side. Her favorite food is radishes.
Shinsuke (真介)
A warrior on a journey of martial training, originating from peasant roots. Having been oppressed in his childhood, he harbors a strong desire to become powerful and respected.
During his travels, he encounters Jinka and Tama, witnessing the existence of darkness and Jinka’s battles firsthand.
Inspired by this, he decides to join them on their journey to become stronger.
Shakugan (灼岩)
A red-haired girl who, having been rescued by Jinka, Tama, and Shinsuke, joins them on their journey.
She is naive and cheerful, but possesses spiritual powers far beyond normal humans from a young age, and harbors a tragic past.
Unknown to many, she is actually an experimental subject known as a “Spiritually Enhanced Modified Human,” designed to fuse the essences of darkness and humanity.
