description of works
“Bye Bye, Earth” is a Japanese fantasy novel written by Tow Ubukata, first published in 2000 by Kadokawa Shoten.
The story centers around a human girl named Bell, born as a monstrous form known as “nopperabou” who possesses the ability to leap extraordinarily and has superhuman strength.
The narrative unfolds in and around the city of Schubertland, where a divine tree is worshiped and a complex society with various social strata and conflicts is depicted.
The novel features significant swords, each with unique abilities and symbolic meanings.
The series was republished in four volumes by Kadokawa Bunko between 2007 and 2008 with new illustrations.
It was also adapted into a manga serialized in “Young King Ours” magazine from 2020 to 2022.
Synopsis
In a world inhabited by beastfolk, each bearing traits of various animals, Bell Labruck emerges as the sole “human.”
Devoid of fangs, fur, or scales, she is known as “nopperabou,” a faceless being, and faces loneliness as she can find no others like her.
Yearning to connect with the world, Bell decides to embark on a journey to discover her origins, armed with a sword as tall as herself, named “Roaring Sword (Runding).”
Unaware of the numerous trials that await her, she steps forward into her quest.
Introduce the main characters
Belle Lablac (ラブラック=ベル, Raburakku Beru)
Bell, a human girl, is an anomaly in her world, born from a stone egg known colloquially as the “sage’s stone.”
She lacks any connection to the earth, enabling her to perform extraordinary leaps and exhibit formidable strength.
Dubbed a “nopperabou,” or faceless being, her extraordinary abilities lead others to label her as a “beastly” creature.
Bell wields the “Roaring Sword” (Runding), a massive blade that reflects her emotions, shifting from a dull metal to a gleaming silver edge when activated.
The sword, bearing the engraving EREHWON, which hints at an otherworldly realm, has the peculiar property of regenerating its blade when broken.
Marked by a curse that prevents her from cutting certain things, Bell ventures to transcend the divine, earning her the epithet of the “Transcender,” one who surpasses the divine.
Adonis Kuestion (クエスティオン=アドニス, Kuesution Adonisu)
Adonis, a member of the Moon Eye tribe with silver hair and a red bandana, is known as the “Sword Thief” because he uses swords from the deceased.
Due to a curse that makes anything he touches decay if there’s strong emotional resonance, he can’t have his own sword.
He uses swords as expendable items and has a familiar named Bamboo, an interdimensional beast that stores swords.
His personal sword, the Rusty Claw (Rustineel), perpetually regenerates its broken blade and is uniquely frayed.
Sian Lablac (ラブラック=シアン, Raburakku Shian)
Sian, a mentor from the Moon Eye tribe, holds faint memories for Bell, his pupil. Wielding a lapis-lazuli-colored sword marked ENOLA (“the instructor”), he was once destined for kingship but felt enslaved by the gods.
After accidentally killing a fellow heir, Sian meets Dranbuie, leading him to doubt the divine and eventually mentor Bell to create a new world, challenging ancient orders.
Gaf Shandy (シャンディ=ガフ, Shandi Gafu)
Gaf, a member of the dominant Moon Eye tribe with golden fur, leads the Ivory Clergy. After the king’s death, he assumes the role of Elder King (Fortune).
Known for his serious and strict demeanor, he is not stubborn and is well-respected by others. He wields the “Kingdom’s Sword,” which bears the engraving EMOCLEW (“kingdom”).
This double-edged sword is crimson but occasionally gleams gold. Gaf also has a brother.
