“Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night” is an original anime television series produced by Doga Kobo and created by JELEE. It is scheduled to premiere on April 7, 2024.
The series is directed by Ryohei Takeshita, with series composition by Yūki Yaku, original character designs by popman3580, and animation character designs adapted by Junichirō Taniguchi.
This series marks the 50th anniversary of Doga Kobo and is set in Shibuya, Tokyo. A manga adaptation illustrated by Niko Fujii is scheduled to begin serialization in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket manga website in April 2024.
Synopsis.
Yoru Mitsuki, an illustrator who has ceased drawing; Nonoka Tachibana, an ex-idol aiming to validate her singing talent; Nox Ryūgasaki, a VTuber boasting to be the strongest;
and Kimura-chan, a secretive composer driven by the desire to support her favorite individual, unite to create an incognito artist collective known as “JELEE”.

Introducing the main characters
Mahiru Kōzuki (光月まひる, Kōzuki Mahiru) / Yoru Mitsuki (海月ヨル)
A typical high school girl with a non-confrontational attitude, she has an overly sensitive nature, making her both empathetic and easily hurt by even the smallest things.
During her childhood, she was active as the illustrator “Yoru Kurage” but was forced to halt her activities due to a certain incident, leaving her traumatized by the idea of being special.
As a result, she strived to live as ordinarily as possible. However, her encounter with Kanon becomes a turning point, steering her life back towards the extraordinary.
Kano Yamanouchi (山ノ内花音, Yamanouchi Kano)
A former idol who is straightforward about her desires, she holds strong opinions and is not easily swayed by others.
Previously, she was the center of the idol group “Sunflower Dolls” as Nonoka Tachibana but graduated following a controversy.
Determined to pursue what she truly wants, she begins to search for her path. During this journey,
encountering the creator of a jellyfish mural that changed her perspective—Yoru Kurage—helps her discover what she can do in her own unique way.
Kiwi Watase (渡瀬キウイ, Watase Kiui)
Mahiru’s childhood friend, active as the VTuber “Nox Ryūgasaki,” continually broadcasts her belief in being the strongest entity.
She is the type who quickly becomes proficient at anything she tries, and all the skills she showcases as a VTuber are genuinely hers.
However, this disparity is part of why she struggles to fully blend in with those around her.
She is the only person with whom Mahiru can talk about the past without concern, and as a cherished friend, she spares no effort to support her.
Mei “Kim Anouk” Takanashi (高梨・キム・アヌーク・めい, Takanashi “Kimu Anūku” Mei)
A young lady attending a prestigious music high school affiliated with a conservatory, she has been receiving music prodigy education from a young age and has won numerous awards in competitions.
Being of mixed German descent, her appearance and her tendency to keep a distance from others often left her solitary.
However, by chance, she became a fan of Nonoka Tachibana and continued to be a fervent supporter, following her idol passionately until the end.
Lost after her favorite’s retirement, she encounters Kanon in her true form, sparking a whirlwind of complex emotions.
