“The content and passing criteria of the pillars’ training vary, but in Himejima Gyomei’s training, it seems there is a non-compulsory aspect where ‘you can quit and descend the mountain whenever you want to give up’.”

Uzui Tengen: Endurance training & basic physical strength improvement (mainly running)

Let’s delve into the training regimen spearheaded by Uzui Tengen and its key events. Uzui Tengen’s training focused on enhancing foundational physical strength, subjecting the demon slayers to rigorous exercises like running and push-ups.

Although the intensity of the training pushed many to their limits, Tanjiro Kamado, who joined partway, managed to complete the challenges with relative ease.

It’s also implied that Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira, who underwent different training sessions, effortlessly succeeded as well.

In the Entertainment District arc, Uzui Tengen and Tanjiro Kamado join forces. Initially underestimated as an average demon slayer, Tanjiro’s achievements, including his triumph over an upper-rank demon, earn Uzui’s respect.

Upon their reunion, Uzui, now fully recognizing Tanjiro’s capabilities, quickly declares him successful in the training. This mutual admiration highlights their camaraderie and Tanjiro’s acknowledged prowess.

Tokito Muichiro: High-speed movement

Let’s explore the training led by Tokito Muichiro, which centered around mastering high-speed movements through the control of muscle tension and relaxation.

Despite the challenging nature of this training, Tanjiro Kamado, having already proven his mettle against upper-rank demons, was greeted with a smile and promptly passed by Muichiro.

However, the same leniency was not extended to the other demon slayers, who, due to their insufficient skills, were met with Muichiro’s sharp criticism, being told bluntly that they fell short of expectations.

Muichiro Tokito, a standout character from the Swordsmith Village arc, initially displayed a cold demeanor towards Tanjiro Kamado.

Yet, as the arc unfolded, a friendship developed between them. Given Muichiro’s amnesia, his lack of companions made his burgeoning trust and reliance on Tanjiro all the more significant.

While Muichiro’s interactions with Tanjiro in the Pillar Training arc were marked by kindness, the stark contrast in his treatment towards other demon slayers has sparked discussions about his unique approach to mentorship and camaraderie.

Kanroji Mitsuri: Hellish flexibility training

Delving into the training overseen by Kanroji Mitsuri, dubbed “Hellish Flexibility,” we find demon slayers engaging in movements reminiscent of rhythmic gymnastics.

This session, while seemingly gentler with breaks featuring pancakes and tea, pushes the limits of flexibility, leaving participants experiencing their own kind of torment as they are forced to stretch beyond their comfort zones.

The use of leotards, primarily designed for women, adds a layer of embarrassment for all participants except Tanjiro Kamado, who are not accustomed to such attire.

Kanroji Mitsuri, known for her exceptional flexibility, showcased her ability to dodge attacks from upper-rank demons repeatedly in the Swordsmith Village arc.

This underscores the vital role flexibility plays in survival, enabling practitioners to execute unconventional attacks by enhancing their range of motion.

Mitsuri’s insistence on participants performing splits, despite their evident discomfort and vocal protests, highlights the rigorous demands of her training approach, designed to improve agility and survivability.

Iguro Obanai: Forced swordsmanship training

Exploring the training regimen led by Iguro Obanai, which focuses on “Swordsmanship Correction,” we see demon slayers maneuvering through obstacles while swinging wooden swords.

In a twist, those deemed weaker by Iguro Obanai were positioned as obstacles themselves, silently hoping to avoid being struck.

Tanjiro Kamado faced challenges during this training, but by the fourth day, his swordsmanship improved significantly, along with his concentration.

Iguro Obanai is known for wielding a flamberge, a sword characterized by its wavy blade, which complements his unique fighting style.

His ability to execute unexpected strikes, thanks to his flexible joints, often leaves opponents surprised by hits they thought they had evaded.

Despite the obstacle-laden environment, Iguro ensured that actual attacks never hit the trainees, focusing instead on honing their concentration and reflexes, as evidenced by Tanjiro’s enhanced focus following the training.

Shinazugawa Sanemi: Infinite striking practice

Let’s delve into the intensive training led by Sanemi Shinazugawa, characterized by “Endless Repetition,” where participants relentlessly practice without breaks under Sanemi’s watchful eye.

The depiction of demon slayers engaging in continuous attacks, even as Sanemi strikes back, illustrates a grueling environment where letting one’s guard down could result in fainting.

The harshness of the training prompted some to flee, only to be faced with the daunting choice of returning to training or facing dire consequences from Sanemi.

Tanjiro Kamado, despite his proven ability to combat upper-rank demons, found himself challenged by the formidable Sanemi during training.

The situation escalated when an altercation broke out between Sanemi and his brother Genya, with Tanjiro intervening, leading to a significant conflict between Tanjiro and Sanemi.

This incident resulted in a restraining order against Tanjiro from approaching Sanemi, effectively ending his training prematurely without official completion.

Himejima Gyomei: Muscle strengthening training

Exploring the training regimen under Gyomei Himejima, focused on “Muscle Enhancement,” participants undergo rigorous exercises such as enduring waterfalls, carrying three logs at once, and moving a rock approximately 100 meters.

The aim is to harness explosive power through proper breathing techniques and repetitive motions. Tanjiro Kamado successfully manages the log carrying exercise but faces significant challenges with the rock-pushing drill.

Gyomei Himejima’s tragic past plays a crucial role in his training philosophy, where chanting Buddhist sutras serves as a catalyst for improving cardiovascular function.

Tanjiro draws on the memories of his slain family and the inspiring words of Kyojuro Rengoku, “Set your heart ablaze,” to push beyond his limits and move the rock.

Genya Shinazugawa, a disciple of Gyomei, also shares his insights with Tanjiro, providing guidance on the technique for pushing the rock, showcasing the importance of mental strength and perseverance in overcoming physical challenges.

Tomioka Giyu: Not participating…

“The reason and past for Giyu Tomioka’s non-participation”

Giyu Tomioka’s absence from participation stems from a deep-seated belief that he is not worthy to stand alongside the other pillars, attributing it to a self-deprecating view of himself.

Giyu never passed the Final Selection. After the death of his parents, he lived with his sister, Tsutako, surviving on their inheritance.

On the eve of Tsutako’s wedding celebration, a demon attacked them, resulting in her death. When Giyu revealed the attack,

those around him thought he had lost his mind and decided to send him to a distant relative who was a doctor in the Tomioka family.

Attempting to escape this fate, Giyu ran away and was on the brink of death in the mountains when he was rescued by an acquaintance of Sakonji Urokodaki, leading to his meeting with Sakonji.

There, he met a boy his age named Sabito, who was also orphaned. Giyu and Sabito quickly became friends, but during the Final Selection,

Sabito saved Giyu from injury and went on to assist all the other participants before confronting the Hand Demon that Tanjiro Kamado later fought.

Giyu, unconscious from his injuries, woke up after the Selection had ended. Unknowingly fulfilling the requirement of surviving for seven days, he was declared to have passed.

However, he was later informed that the only fatality that year, hence the only one who did not pass, was Sabito, killed by the Hand Demon.

This knowledge led Giyu to continually blame himself, questioning whether someone who had not killed a single demon and only survived through the help of others truly deserved to pass the Selection.

He fundamentally viewed himself as unworthy of being a pillar or even belonging to the Demon Slayer Corps.

After confiding in Tanjiro, Giyu was reminded of Sabito’s words, which Tanjiro relayed back to him. This rekindled his resolve, and he eventually decided to join the Pillar Training midway.

Kochou Shinobu: Not participating due to training of adopted child, Kanao Tsuyuri

“The reason Shinobu Kocho does not participate”

Shinobu’s situation is not that she “chooses not to participate” but rather “cannot participate.”

This is because Kagaya Ubuyashiki had initiated contact with Tamayo through Kasugai Crows, proposing a collaboration against Muzan Kibutsuji.

Although it was not disclosed what Shinobu was doing during the Pillar Training arc, it was later revealed during the final battle that Shinobu was working with Tamayo to develop a certain “medicine.”

Additionally, during this time, Shinobu conveyed to Kanao Tsuyuri how to defeat Doma, the demon responsible for killing her sister Kanae Kocho.

She revealed that her body, weighing 37 kilograms, had become a mass of poison from continuously consuming the Wisteria flower poison for a year (this detail was also disclosed in the final battle).

Given Doma’s preference for consuming women, Shinobu had prepared for her ultimate battle with the anticipation of her possible defeat.

Furthermore, apart from the medicine Tamayo was developing, Shinobu also prepared a reserve “antidote for turning demons back into humans” and entrusted it to Kanao.

This preparation underscores Shinobu’s strategic planning and dedication to the Corps’ ultimate goal, even in her absence from the Pillar Training.
