What is Black Butler?
“Black Butler” is a Japanese manga series written by Yana Toboso. It has been serialized in Square Enix’s “Monthly G Fantasy” magazine since the October 2006 issue.
Set in late 19th-century England, the author describes the setting as a “so-called parallel world.”
This series marks Toboso’s first foray into long-term serialization. Originally intended as a short-term project, the content of the first volume (chapters 1-4) was envisioned as such,
while the material from the second volume (chapter 5 onward) transitioned into a long-term project. As of April 2019,
the series had surpassed 7.5 million copies in international circulation, and by December 2023, the global series had exceeded 35 million copies.
The manga led to the release of a drama CD on August 10, 2007, followed by an adaptation into an anime television series starting in 2008.
A stage play was performed in May 2009, and a live-action film was released on January 18, 2014.
